Did a comedic actor just break the biggest football story of the year?

Parks and Recreation has been called the best comedy on network television. It might just add a new acclaim to its collection if a crazy report from one of its stars turns out to be true: the only comedy on network television to break major NFL news. Actor Rob Lowe, who plays Chris Traeger on the show, says that Indianapolis Colts quarterback Peyton Manning is going to retire.

Lowe posted on his Twitter feed that he’s heard from his “people” that Manning is set to announce his retirement immediately. Specifically, Lowe posted the following:

Hearing my fave, #18 Peyton Manning will not return to #NFL. Wow.#Colts

It’s worth noting that Lowe does have some ties to the NFL, so this news isn’t coming completely out of deep left field (rather, it’s coming out of shallow left field, or at least somewhere in left short of the warning track). Lowe has appeared on the Rich Eisen Podcast, hosted by the NFL Network’s Rich Eisen. Lowe is also reportedly close friends with Indianapolis Colts owner Jim Irsay. The two can be seen posing together in this photograph:

Currently, legitimate NFL reporters are scrambling to figure out whether there is any truth to the story and whether they were actually scooped by a guy who starred in Austin Powers. There have been rumblings about Manning’s surgically repaired neck healing too slowly for him to ever make a return to the field, but we certainly haven’t heard anything concrete.

We’ll keep you updated on how this story progresses. For the moment, we’re waiting to hear back from Ashton Kutcher on whether Aaron Rodgers will demand a trade this off-season.

The most gruesome injury of the NFL season.

It wasn’t a good day for Chicago Bears wide receiver Johnny Knox yesterday. During his game against the Seattle Seahawks, Knox dove to recover a fumble and a huge defensive player collided with his upper body, bending Knox’s body in such a way that it looked like he would surely be paralyzed.

Knox was carted off the field on a stretched and rushed to hospital.

Knox reportedly has movement in his hands and feet, but he’s going in for surgery to stabilize his verterbrae (I have no idea what that means, but it doesn’t sound good). He will obviously be out for the remainder of the season and who knows how long after that. It’s possible his career is over.

It was by far the most gruesome injury in an NFL season that has seen quite a few bad injuries (like Packers tight end Andrew Quarless’ leg snapping in half). Take a look for yourself:

Audio from the opening scene of 'The Dark Knight Rises' has leaked to the Internet.

Fans in need of a Batman fix can see the first 10 minutes of The Dark Knight Rises before Mission: Impossible – Ghost Protocol when it opens next week. The prologue of the film was shot in IMAX and will be screened in front of the fourth movie in the Mission Impossible series–but only in theaters offering IMAX.

Early reports on the prologue are very good. Many who have seen it compare it to the prologue in The Dark Knight, in which Joker and his thugs stage an elaborate heist. Bane is the villain in The Dark Knight Returns and (SPOILERS) the prologue in this film is said to also feature a heist that introduces the antagonist. According to rumors, the heist involves a plane.

If you absolutely can’t wait to see the prologue in theaters (or there isn’t an IMAX theater near you to see it in), the latest buzz is that someone recorded the audio in the prologue and uploaded it to YouTube. Although Warner Bros. is clamping down on every upload of the audio, you might be able to find it if you look hard enough. We’ll include an embed below, but it will probably be dead by the time you read this.

Some reviewers have complained that everything Bane says is muddled and hard to make out. This is perhaps not surprising, since the character wears a mask. Still, it’s pretty important to hear the things that a film’s characters say.

Listening to an iPod or iPhone through earbuds is a decidedly private activity. The iMainGo X flips the script and allows you to share your portable audio with those around you. Read on for our complete review.

Listening to an iPod or iPhone through earbuds is a decidedly private activity. The iMainGo X flips the script and allows you to share your portable audio with those around you. Though it may not be a product that you use every day, it’s not hard to imagine a variety of scenarios where the iMainGo X would be of great use. It’s a great device for taking your tunes to the beach, the campfire or any other public place where a portable stereo would be too cumbersome. It’s also great for listening in rooms in the home where you otherwise couldn’t or wouldn’t, such as in the garage while you’re working on your car or in the bathroom while you soak in a hot bath.

Look and Feel
The iMainGo X is designed to look like a portable cassette player–a Walkman, for those old enough to remember the existence of such a thing. It might be more accurate to describe it as a really fat wallet with speakers on one side and a clear plastic window that allows you to see through to your mobile device on the other. The case of the iMainGo X is very sturdy and the exterior is a smooth, black fabric that feels durable and looks quite sleek. The clamshell case opens via a zipper to reveal an interior that consists of the internal hardware (including a rechargeable battery and amplifier) and a “slot” for your mobile device (ostensibly, an iPod or iPhone, although any small mp3 player with a standard 3.5 mm headphone jack will work). I was happy to discover that my iPhone fit in without forcing me to remove the thick plastic case I use. A piece of foam is included to ensure that even smaller devices (like an iPod Nano) will fit in snugly and safely.

Interface

There is no interface to speak of here. The clear window in the case allows you to directly manipulate your iPod or iPhone while it’s inside the case, although it can be difficult to manipulate a touchscreen device (like an iPod Touch or iPhone) through the plastic with accuracy. Switching tracks and adjusting volume is all done via your mobile device, not the iMainGo X itself. On the other side of the case, there’s a power switch, charging port and several other ports for plugging in headphones and even a microphone (so you can use the iMainGo X as a sort of mini-megaphone). It’s not entirely clear why you would want to plug headphones into the iMainGo X when you could connect your headphones directly to your iPod or iPhone, but one possibility is so that you can share your private audio with a friend–there are two headphone ports on the case.

Technical Specs

The iMainGo X’s speakers are 37mm premium high output stereo speakers that output 2.1 W per channel. The battery is a rechargeable lithium-ion that claims to have a life of 12 hours. The charging cable in included in the box. Unlike some other iPod speakers, the iMainGo X does not charge the battery on your phone or mp3 player. Charging the battery on an iMainGo X takes about six hours, which can be a bit of a bummer if you don’t plan ahead and give it a charge well in advance of use.

Sound

For portable speakers, the iMainGo X sounds great. The audio is clear and the volume can be adjusted up to a level that would be more than adequate for a small party. The bass isn’t booming, but it is more powerful than you would expect from such a small device. I listened to music and podcasts and found no instances where I was disappointed with the quality of the sound. At the upper end of the volume scale, audio gets a bit distorted, but this is par for the course with devices of this sort.

Portability

The iMainGo X is much to large too fit in anyone’s pockets, but it can easily be carried in a purse or small bag. It comes with a carry bag and a lanyard that allows you to wear it around your neck, but I had a hard time imagining myself using either item.

Best Features

Sounds great

Rechargeable battery–no chance of running out of AAs!

Durable, enclosed design of the device makes you feel like your iPod or iPhone is safe from the elements

Needs Improvement

It would be nice if the battery charged in less than six hours

Perhaps a bit too bulky

If you get a phone call while your iPhone is inside the iMainGo X, you have to unzip the case in order to remove your phone and take the call

Cats with the condition that Frank and Louie has are called Janus cats. They usually die within a few days of their birth. When Frank and Louie was just one day old, he was set to be euthanized. There was no hope for him to have a long life.

An employee at the clinic where Frank and Louie was going to be euthanized wanted to give him a chance, though. Marty Stevens is her name and she rescued Frank and Louie and took him home. 12 years later, he’s still going strong.

At age 12, Frank and Louie is officially listed with Guinness World Records as the longest-living cat with his condition. Most Janus cats suffer from problems like choking, but Frank and Louie doesn’t because he eats with only one of his two mouths.

Frank and Louie has two noses, which both work. He has three eyes, but he only sees out of the outer two. His middle eye remains open all the time, which is kind of creepy.

What does Frank and Louie think about his incredible life? He seems to think he’s just a regular cat. He’s friendly and likes going on walks and being around people.

It’s difficult to describe last night in the world of baseball without resorting to hyperbole. Perhaps it wasn’t the greatest day in baseball history, but it was without question the craziest few moments the game has ever seen.

In a span of less than ten minutes, Jonathan Papelbon had blown just his third save of the season (and second in the Red Sox’ final home stand) and the Red Sox suddenly needed the hated Yankees to take care of the Rays in Tampa. Seconds after the score of the Red Sox game was posted in Tampa, Evan Longoria struck a home run to shallow left and the Rays had completed one of the most improbably comebacks in MLB history.

The Red Sox entered September with a nine-game lead for the American League Wild Card and they blew it. They entered the ninth inning of last night’s game with a one-run lead and they blew it.

The Rays accomplished the opposite. Trailing the Yankees 7-0 at the beginning of the eighth inning, they rallied. Down to their last strike of the game (and of the season), Dan Johnson struck a game-tying solo home run to force extra innings. Then, Longoria pulled off his magic.

ESPN has a full timeline of the remarkable events.

In the tight battle to be the leading media streamer, the Roku surprised a lot of people by carving out a significant portion of the market.

In the tight battle to be the leading media streamer, the Roku surprised a lot of people by carving out a significant portion of a market that included more hyped products like the Boxee Box, Apple TV and Google TV. To date, Roku has sold over a million of its devices, like the Roku HD, Roku XD and Roku XDS, that allow users to stream NetFlix, Hulu Plus and other online media in full high definition on their televisions for a fraction of the price of their competitors.

It turns out that Roku isn’t content to rest in its position as a leader in the media streaming world, though. The Roku 2 was just unveiled and it features something that was previously unheard of among media streamers: motion-controlled gaming.

That’s right, the Roku is now taking on the Nintendo Wii–and a very big name is along for the ride: Angry Birds. The new Roku controllers work much the same way as Wiimotes do, albeit with a little less technological sophistication. The tremendously popular game Angry Birds is the flagship launch title, but Roku has plans to make a large library of casual games available to Roku 2 users.

Three models of the Roku 2 will his store shelves soon: the HD, XD and XS. They will be priced the same as the their original Roku counterparts, although they are all much smaller and feature-rich.

The XD comes with a 1080p video output (a feature lacking on the HD) and the XS comes with a game remote, which will run you about $30 if purchased separately.

It sure has been an exciting few days for fans of superhero movies. First, we had the official release of the teaser for next summer's The Dark Knight Rises. Now, the teaser for next summer's The Amazing Spider-Man has leaked.

It sure has been an exciting few days for fans of superhero movies. First, we had the official release of the teaser for next summer’s The Dark Knight Rises. Now, the teaser for next summer’s The Amazing Spider-Man has leaked.

The movie studio will try to kill this one off as soon as they can, so we can’t guarantee that you’ll be able to see this one for much longer. For now, you can see a bootleg video of the teaser here.

The Amazing Spider-Man is a reboot of the Spider-Man film franchise. Curiously, it’s coming to us only 3 years after Spider-Man 3 hit theaters, possibly the shortest time ever from original to remake. It stars Andrew Garfield (from The Social Network) as Peter Parker. It is directed by Marc Webb.

It looks like, once again, we’ll get to (have to?) see the origin story for Spider-Man. Rather than Mary Jane being the love interest, this time it will be Gwen Stacey (played by Emma Stone). Dr. Curt Connors, also known as The Lizard, will be the main villain.

Jake Gyllenhaal will be guest-starring on the the season premiere of Man Vs. Wild and it looks like the film star had no trouble opening up to his wild side.

Jake Gyllenhaal will be joining outdoorsman and famed pee-drinker Bear Grylls on the the season premiere of Man Vs. Wild, airing Monday, July 11 at 9pm ET/PT on Discovery.

In the episode, the two travel to Iceland to tackle the challenges its wilderness offers.

The promo for the episode was just released. In it, Gyllenhaal looks a bit out of his element at first. Grylls says “it takes balls,” undoubtedly referring to one of the nastier elements of wilderness survival, and Gyllenhaal responds, cleverly, “they’re right in my throat right now.”

<iframe width=”560″ height=”349″ src=”http://www.youtube.com/embed/uE5HdfaB3bE” frameborder=”0″ allowfullscreen></iframe>

Juding by the video, it looks like Gyllenhaal eventually got over any reservations he may have had about embracing the challenge. The shot only lasts a split second, but it looks like he even tore apart some kind of animal carcass (see for yourself at the 0:09 mark).

The reviews for the third installment in the Transformers movie series are in and they are... not that bad. Not good, but not terrible.

The reviews for the third installment in the Transformers movie series are in and they are… not that bad. Not good, but not terrible.

If you’re one of the many who felt that Transformers 2 (technically, it was called
Transformers: Revenge of the Fallen) failed to live up to expectations, you might be mildly surprised by the quality of Transformers 3 (you also might be kind of an idiot for having high expectations for a sequel about giant space robots). According to the reviews, it is a significant upgrade over the quality of the last film in the series.

Let’s not get too far ahead of ourselves, here. Don’t expect the next Citizen Kane or anything close. Make no mistake: Transformers 3 is still jam-packed with effects and pretty light on plot. What little plot there is actually makes some sense this time around, though. It all starts with the revelation that the Apollo 11 moon mission was not just a mission to walk on the moon, but also to uncover an alien spaceship (conspiracy theorists will eat that one up).

We’ve got to hand it to director Michael Bay–the moon sequence is original and borderline clever.

From there, though, things turn back into what you’d expect from a Transformers movie. There are plenty of explosions, a hot female lead (it’s Rosie Huntington-Whiteley this time, not Megan Fox) and painfully lame attempts at humor.

The reports are that the visual effects–in 3D this time–are truly fantastic.

Transformers: Dark of the Moon opens tonight at midnight.

If you’re one of the last remaining people on earth who thinks O.J. Simpson is innocent, maybe this news will convince you. According to the National Enquirer, Simpson has confessed to killing ex-wife Nicole Brown Simpson and Ronald Goldman. Just who did he open up to? None other than Oprah. Or one of her producers, at least.

According to the magazine, Simpson (who’s currently behind bars on robbery and kidnapping charges stemming from a 2007 incident) is willing to go on camera and confess his crimes to the world.

According to an Enquirer “insider,” Simpson told an Oprah producer to “tell Oprah that yes, I did it. I killed Nicole, but it was in self-defense. She pulled a knife on me and I had to defend myself.”

Simpson was found not guilty of the 1994 murders of Nicole Brown Simpson and Ronald Goldman.

Interestingly, this news has come out soon after Oprah was quoted as saying Simpson is one of the people she would most like to interview on her new television network, OWN.

At this point, we need to draw your attention to the source of this story. While the National Enquirer has broken a few major stories over the years, the tabloid has missed the mark badly on too many to mention. There’s a very high likelihood that this one is a complete fabrication.

Comedy Central announced today that it is canceling 'Sports Show With Norm MacDonald.' The network is also turning off the lights for 'Onion SportsDome,' effectively wiping out the world's supply of televised sports comedy in one fell swoop.

Norm Macdonald has long been a favorite of comedy fans on the Internet. His bizarre, hilarious and occasionally incoherent appearances on Conan and at celebrity roasts are celebrated in all corners of the web. Heck, even his old Saturday Night Live Weekend Update miscues (the ones that got him fired from SNL) are looked upon with a loving fondness.

Yes, the Internet loves Norm. Just don’t the Internet to watch him on his new (and now extinct) television show.

Comedy Central announced today that it is canceling ‘Sports Show with Norm Macdonald.’ The network is also turning off the lights for ‘Onion SportsDome,’ effectively wiping out the world’s supply of televised sports comedy in one fell swoop.

Macdonald’s ratings weren’t awful–he averaged 1.1 million viewers in his slot following ‘Tosh.0′–but they weren’t good enough to earn him a second season.

I’d love to say that it’s a shame the show was canceled, but I have to admit that I didn’t watch it. The few clips I saw online were great, but never enough to inspire me to tune in live. That’s always been the problem with Norm–he’s great in small doses and it’s always fun to come back to his unique comedy after you haven’t seen him in a while, but he’s not the kind of guy you want to spend time with every week.

It’s unclear what’s next for Norm, but I would imagine a slew of self-deprecating late-night talk show appearances is inevitable.

We’ll leave you with a “classic” clip from ‘Sports Show with Norm Macdonald.’

The man who caught the most famous pass in Super Bowl history has warned against what he feels are the extreme dangers of making gay marriage legal in the United States. Former New York Giant David Tyree said that he thinks legalizing same-sex marriage could eventually lead to “anarchy.”

Tyree made the comments in a promotional video for the National Organization for Marriage, a group that has come out strongly against gay marriage.

“If they pass this gay marriage bill, what I know will happen is this will be the beginning of our country sliding toward … it’s a strong word, but, anarchy,” Tyree said. “Marriage is one of those things that is the backbone of society. So if you redefine it, it changes the way we educate our children, it changes the perception of what is good, what is right, what is just.”

Tyree failed to explain how, exactly, society would fall apart by allowing gay marriage beyond his cryptic words about the perception of right and wrong.

You can see Tyree’s full statement here:

Tyree’s comments have gone viral and he’s come under a lot of fire since making the controversial statement from fans and even a former teammate.

Former Giant (and Super Bowl winner alongside Tyree) Michael Stahan certainly doesn’t agree with him. Stahan recently appeared in a video supporting same-sex marriage in New York. Steve Tisch, the chairman and executive vice president of the New York Giants, has also come out in favor of same-sex marriage.

The Boston Bruins dominated the Vancouver Canucks in Game 7 of the Stanley Cup Final last night, taking home the Cup for the first time since 1972.

After the game, many of the thousands of Vancouver citizens who were watching the game on giant video screens in the streets began to riot. They overturned cars, set fires and looted. It was a sad and embarrassing scene for the city of Vancouver, Canada as a whole and the game of hockey.

Graphic images and video have begun to emerge from last night’s scene. They show the extent of the carnage and, in many cases, the faces of the perpetrators.

In this video, we see a man try to prevent some hooligans from breaking store windows. At about the 2:57 mark, the man is savagely beaten by rioters.

Here, we see rioters destroy an overturned car before police arrive and disperse the crowd with tear gas.

This video, which we cannot embed, shows a young person being hit in the groin with a flash bang device launched by police.

This morning, angry Vancouver citizens have called for the rioters to be identified and charged by police. Several Facebook groups and websites have been set up to post photos and video of rioters, in an effort to expose their involvement.

Lord of the Rings and Game of Thrones star Sean Bean was allegedly stabbed in the arm outside a London pub over the weekend. What did the grizzled actor do ? According to reports, Bean went back inside and kept drinking.

Witnesses said Bean stepped outside of the pub to enjoy a cigarette with friend (and possible romantic interest) April Summers, a young British glamor model and former Playboy Playmate. While outside, a passer-by made some rude comments about Summers that Bean was not exactly pleased with. He confronted the man who made the comments. Later in the evening, the commenter allegedly returned to the bar, punched Bean in the face and stabbed him with a shard of glass.

Rather than head to the hospital, Bean is said to have allowed the pub staff to clean him up with their first aid kit and then he kept drinking. Really, though, would we have expected anything else from the man who plays Ned Stark, the Lord of Winterfell?

No word on what happened to the attacker, but it wouldn’t be a surprise to hear that Bean dispensed of him with swift justice.

You can catch Bean on Game of Thrones, currently airing on HBO.

Images and tidbits of information are starting to leak out concerning Nintendo’s next major console release. The console will be the first Nintento has released since the Wii came out in 2006. It’s codenamed “Project Cafe” and is expected to hit stores in time for Christmas 2012.

Nothing that we’ve heard is confirmed, so don’t get too attached to anything that you see or read about this top-secret project. It’s quite possible that everything that has come out so far is an elaborate hoax. Then again, much of what we’ve seen and heard makes perfect sense.

Let’s start with this image. It is allegedly a concept drawing for the new console. We recommend expanding it to full size and taking a close look.

IGN did a mock-up of the controller. This image is definitely not real, but it gives a good indication of what the controllers could end up looking like.

What we see in the images above appears to be a clear move away from the look and feel of the Wii (and, in particular, the Wiimote). Gone are the long, rectangular Wiimotes and in their place are controllers that look very similar to those of the Nintendo GameCube. The key difference is that these controllers have LCD screens. This wouldn’t be the first gaming system to use controllers with screens in them (the Sega Dreamcast did that back in the late ’90s), but it would be a marked change from what Nintendo, Sony and Microsoft are doing with their consoles today.

If we read the text in the image, we see evidence of how these screens are to be used. For 4-player games that divide the screen into quarters (like Mario Kart), the controller’s LCD screen could be used to mirror your quarter of the screen. This could potentially be very useful in games where it’s currently possible to cheat by peeking at your opponent’s screen. For a game like Madden, it would be fantastic to be able to select your plays without your opponent seeing what you’re doing. For RPGs and similar games, it would be useful to display maps or inventory lists on your controller.

It also seems possible that these new controllers will allow gamers to play games even when they’re not in the same room as the TV. They could be taken to a bedroom or the bathroom and used much the same was as the Nintendo DS and iPod Touch are used for gaming these days (admit it–you play games when you’re sitting on the can). The console would be needed to do actually run the game software, but it’s not crazy to think that it could stream games to each controller via wifi.

Now that we’ve gone over the basics of what we see in the leaked image, a few thoughts jump out. The first is that it would be a bit unusual (albeit hilarious) to see Nintendo move away from motion-based game soon after Sony and Microsoft finally caught up (with the releases of the Move and Kinect, respectively). The second is that controllers with LCD screens are probably going to be very expensive.

Project Cafe isn’t expected to hit shelves until late 2012 (probably in time for Christmas). It will be the first of the next-generation consoles to hit the market (new models of PlayStation and XBox aren’t expected until 2013 at the earliest). It will also probably have a unique name that, given Nintendo’s eclectic history of naming consoles (Super Nintendo, Nintendo 64, GameCube, Wii), will come right out of left field.

Learn the facts about this misunderstood menu item before you decide to mock it.

Uh oh. Someone told Twitter about the McLobster.

Twitter users have been having a lot of fun at the expense of McDonald’s in recent days. McLobster has been a trending topic and there’s a steady stream of tweets mocking the menu item.

Sure, it’s easy to make fun of McDonald’s. The company largely produces cheap, low-quality food. It seems bizarre that McDonald’s (a company that isn’t exactly known for gourmet food) would sell a product featuring a food as expensive and decadent as lobster. And lobster on a hot dog bun? Ridiculous.

But wait. Before we all run out and mock McD’s on Twitter, let’s get our facts straight:

The McLobster is real. It’s an actual menu item, but it’s only sold in Atlantic Canada and New England (you know, the part of the world where fresh lobster is somewhat abundant and affordable).

Lobster rolls are real. McDonald’s didn’t invent the idea of slathering lobster meat in mayonnaise and slapping it on a hot dog bun. The lobster roll is a northeastern staple and it is absolutely delicious (believe me–I’ve had a few and nothing compares).

McDonald’s has no plans to sell you a McLobster. The official McDonald’s Twitter account posted this message: Despite all the rumors there r no plans 2 bring #mclobster or mcsushi 2 the US menu. We r working on a new menu item called McWinning. (I was as surprised as you that McDonald’s would go for a Charlie Sheen joke, but good on them for it.)

So there you have it. Before you laugh at McDonald’s for creating an absurd product, you can stop yourself. At least until you find out about the Hula Burger.

As expected, Apple announced the iPad 2 today. Most of the rumors about the device turned out to be true. The biggest surprise of the event was that Steve Jobs was present.

As expected, Apple announced the iPad 2 today. Most of the rumors about the device turned out to be true. It has a better processor. It’s thinner and lighter. It has front and rear cameras and is FaceTime-ready. Same battery life. Same display.

The biggest surprise of the event was that Steve Jobs was present. There have been rumors that his health is failing, but he looked happy and relatively healthy (if a bit on the skinny side) today. Apple fans have to be thrilled to see Steve, although the questions about what will happen to the company when he’s gone remain. With any luck, he won’t be leaving us any time soon.

The second-biggest surprise was that the iPad 2 will be available very soon–March 11, to be exact. Many industry insiders had predicted that it might not ship until April or even May. There was also a mild surprise when it was announced that the iPad 2 will ship in white and black. Jobs poked fun at the failure of the white iPhone 4 (we still haven’t seen any sign of it) that the white version of the iPad 2 would be ready for the initial launch date.

Jobs seemed very excited to show off some new covers for the iPad. They come in polyurethan and leather versions (with about a $30 price difference) and snap onto the iPad 2 with magnets. They do exactly what you’d expect a cover to do: cover the front (glass) side of the iPad when it’s not in use. You can get a look at how it will work here. It’s hard to get excited about a cover, but they seem useful enough. I’d still favor a full case because I’m paranoid about scratching the backs of my Apple devices.

Finally, Jobs and company announced iOS 4.3 (we didn’t get many details about it, except for the fact that it will include the ability for iPhone 4 users to create a mobile hotspot) and a few new apps that have been tailored for use on the iPhone (Photo Booth and GarageBand).

Overall, it was one of the least exciting Apple events in recent memory. There isn’t really a compelling reason to upgrade to the iPad 2 if you currently own an original iPad, but the fact that the iPad 2 won’t cost any more than the original iPad will make it attractive to those looking to purchase their first tablet computer.

The iPad 2, the long-awaited second generation of Apple tablets, is set to be announced today. Find out what features you can expect to see in the new iPad.

The iPad 2, the long-awaited second generation of Apple tablets, is set to be announced today. Apple is hosting an event in San Fransisco at 10 a.m. PST (1 p.m. EST).

Here are five things we can expect to see and hear at the event:

The iPad 2 will be thinner and lighter. It seems like every new Apple product gets smaller. The new iPad will be no exception. In addition to a more streamlined case, the new iPad will have a flat back (which will allow it to be placed on a flat surface without wobbling).

The screen isn’t getting much better. When the iPhone 4 was introduced, it came with a revolutionary new high-resolution screen that Apple called “Retina Display.” Many industry insiders expected the iPad 2 to get a high-resolution display, but the latest rumors say that won’t be happening (at least not until the iPad 3 in announced).

There will be at least one camera. The iPad 2 is expected to be FaceTime-ready, meaning it can be used for video chat. It will have a front-facing camera for sure, but it also might have a camera on the back. Neither camera is expected to be a high-resolution camera (insiders predict a 1MP camera), so you won’t be ditching your digital camera any time soon.

MobileMe might become free. Apple used to charge $99 for their MobileMe service, which included the ability to synch contact, calendars and mail across all your devices, in addition to the ability to locate a lost mobile device. The company recently made the Find My iPhone app free and now it appears Apple might just make the entire MobileMe package a freebie.

Steve Jobs probably won’t be there. The Apple CEO is ailing and he likely won’t be present for today’s event. It’s possible that he could make a brief appearance, but don’t expect him to be the one on stage making the announcement.

Microsoft CEO Steve Balmer took the stage at this year's Mobile World Congress to announce some new features coming to the Windows Phone 7. The question is: does anyone actually care?

Microsoft CEO Steve Balmer took the stage at this year’s Mobile World Congress to announce some new features coming to the Windows Phone 7. Better multi-tasking, better Twitter integration, the abilitity to connect to XBox Kinect and a new web browser (Internet Explorer 9) were the two most notable improvements. The question is: does anyone actually care?

The Windows Phone has been a running joke in the tech sector. It lags far behind the iPhone and Android phones in terms of sales. Ballmer made sure to mention how happy Windows Phone 7 users are, but he conveniently failed to say just how many phones had been sold (according to some reports, Windows Phone captured only a 3 percent share of the market). Steve Jobs certainly never forgets to tout his sales numbers.

Microsoft also announced a partnership with Nokia, a company that has rapidly been losing relevance in the mobile world. The partnership makes sense. Perhaps the two sinking ships can help each other plug their leaks. Then again, maybe the added weight will only cause them to take on more water.

Nokia’s first Windows Phone is expected to hit store shelves by the end of 2011.

Is it better for living room rock stars to burn out than to fade away? Activision announced yesterday that Guitar Hero's flame is going to be extinguished.

Is it better for living room rock stars to burn out than to fade away? Activision announced yesterday that Guitar Hero’s flame is going to be extinguished. Today, the company’s stock took a stage dive and no one was there to catch it.

What went wrong for the once immensely popular Guitar Hero franchise? Certainly a number of different factors were at play. The public became bored with music games, especially as each update to the Guitar Hero franchise added few new features.

The game’s primary competitor, Rock Band, fractured the music gaming market and led to oversaturation. In an interesting twist, Rock Band was produced by the same company that developed Guitar Hero. In 2005, indie game studio RedOctane and Harmonix collaborated to create Guitar Hero. The game was sold to Activision in 2006 for around $100 million. Harmonix then went on to release Rock Band, the first music game to add a microphone and drums to the experience (Guitar Hero soon followed).

While Guitar Hero was tremendously profitable for Activision over the course of its life, earning a reported $2 billion, the franchise has been bleeding money since the most recent holiday season. Activision was forced to make the decision to shut down production and lay off the Guitar Hero division’s 500 employees.

The next big question for Activision is whether it’s biggest game franchise is next. Call of Duty still sells games in record numbers, but Activision is certainly flirting with market oversaturation for that game, too. As long as the company sticks to a strict plan of releasing no more than one new physical and one new downloadable Call of Duty title each year, it should leave gamers wanting more.

The iPad 2 will have a formidable competitor by the time it hits the shelves. HP has unveiled the TouchPad, the first tablet computer that runs on WebOS.

We reported earlier today about the imminent arrival of the iPad 2. Apple’s tablet will have another formidable competitor by the time it hits the shelves. HP has unveiled the TouchPad, the first tablet computer that runs on WebOS 3.0 (the iPad runs on iOS and there are many different tablets on the market that run on the Android operating system).

Before we get into the details, let’s take a look at some amateur video from the unveiling:

The TouchPad has techies buzzing this afternoon. Unlike other iPad competitors, the TouchPad isn’t any smaller or lighter than the original iPad. In fact, it’s the exact same size: 9.7 inches. It weighs in at a healthy 1.6 pounds, so this is not the tablet you want if you find the iPad too heavy.

Where the TouchPad differentiates itself is its features. It offers WiFi, of course, but it also offers wireless charging. That’s right, you just place the device onto a charging pad and it sucks up the electricity without the use of any wires. Very convenient. It also charges via micro-USB for tranditionalists who can’t bear to give up their wires.

The TouchPad has a 1.3 megapixel front-facing camera for video chat (a feature that’s expected in the iPad 2 but missing from the original iPad). It also offers a unique audio engine and a neat feature called Tap-to-Share that allows users to transfer a website, file or even a text message from a phone to the TouchPad (or the other way around) by just tapping the two devices together (gently, we hope).

The TouchPad runs on a Qualcomm Snapdragon dual-CPU APQ8060 1.2-GHz processor. From what we’ve seen, the Snapdragon looks very snappy.

Other specs that matter: the TouchPad comes in 16GB and 32GB models, the screen resolution is 1024×768 and it has Bluetooh capability, an accelerometer, a magnetometer (compass) and a gyroscope.

The TouchPad is expected to go on sale in the summer.

Apple has started manufacturing the new version of the iPad, according to a report in the Wall Street Journal. This news means that an official announcement will be coming shortly.

Apple has started manufacturing the new version of the iPad, according to a report in the Wall Street Journal. This news means that an official announcement will be coming shortly. It’s expected that the next generation iPad will go on sale around April, but it could be on shelves as soon as later this month.

Apple is notoriously tight-lipped, so we still don’t know what the device will be officially named. The obvious choice is “iPad 2″, but Apple has been known to get creative with its naming conventions (MacBook Air, iPod Nano, iPhone 3GS).

What we do know, if reports are to be believed, is that the new iPad will be lighter and thinner than its predecessor. It will feature front and back cameras that will allow it to run FaceTime, Apple’s video chat application. It won’t take the place of your digital camera, though. Not only would using an iPad to take photos be cumbersome, but the iPad 2’s camera is expected to be a 1 megapixel camera (adequate for video chat, but certainly not for documenting your family vacation). It will also feature a larger and more powerful speaker.

The iPad 2’s screen will apparently not be getting an expected upgrade, however. The iPhone 4 (released in June, 2010) featured an ultra-high resolution screen that Apple called the “Retina Display.” Many expected the iPad 2’s screen to feature the same technology, but recent reports suggest that it will not. The is a curious omission, but Apple will surely spin it in a way that won’t make it seem so glaring. They have to save some features for the iPad 3, I guess.

Apple sold 14.8 million iPads in 2010, accounting for more than $8 billion in revenue. Some analysts have estimated that those numbers could double in 2011.

One of the least popular players in the NFL (particularly in the DC area) is about to get even less popular. Washington Redskins defensive tackle Albert Haynesworth has been charged with assault.

It’s alleged that Hayneworth was driving when he got into an altercation with another driver (a 38 year-old man). In what’s being described as an incident of “road rage,” it’s alleged that Haynesworth punched the other driver in the face. Ouch.

Hayneworth’s agent, Chad Speck, disputes the claim (of course). He told the Washington Post that “Albert has yet to speak to the authorities at all on this matter.”

“Only one side of the story has been told at this point in time. If contacted by the authorities, Albert will certainly cooperate in any way. This man, who actually provoked the situation himself, recognized Albert and is now simply trying to turn it into his 15 minutes of fame and get, we can only assume, some money.”

Google unveiled the newest version of its Android operating system today. It's Android version 3.0 and it's called Honeycomb. We've got the details on everything that's new in Honeycomb.

Google unveiled the newest version of its Android operating system today. It’s Android 3.0 and it’s called Honeycomb. The event took place on YouTube (which, of course, Google owns). The event may have lacked some of the luster of recent Apple events (like the flashy iPhone 4 unveiling), but the product being introduced was no less impressive than anything Apple is doing lately.

If you’re already the owner of an Android phone or tablet, you’re probably familiar with the history of the operating system. Names like Gingerbread and Froyo are familiar to you. If you’re new to Android, all you really need to know is that it’s the operating system that runs phones like the Samsung Galaxy S and HTC Evo 4G.

What’s New in Honeycomb?

Honeycomb is designed with tablets in mind. There are new buttons for multi-tasking and notifications. Since tablets have larger screens than phones, there’s more room for open apps and widgets.

There are now templates, which allow developers to create richer and better notifications. The most notable difference is that you now see pictures of people who are messaging you.

Honeycomb also has better performance, particularly with regards to 2D and 3D graphics. Google clearly recognizes that gaming is a major reason why people are buying Android phones and tablets and they want to make sure that game graphics are as smooth and high-resolution as possible. The graphics in Honeycomb are also very fluid as you transition between apps and widgets.

We saw a brand new camera UI, which was cool. Honeycomb will support video chat on devices that have front-facing cameras. This is Google’s answer to Apple’s FaceTime chat (which is on the iPhone 4 and is expected to be on the iPad 2 when it’s announced soon). Video chat is possible on Android devices through Google Talk.

We also were introduced to the Android Market Web Store. Now it’s possible to browse a buy apps on a computer, rather than on your mobile device. App purchases automatically and wirelessly sync to your Android mobile device. The site is live now at market.android.com.

We also got a look at Google Body, which was described as the Google Maps of human anatomy (ou can use it to look up various health and body-related questions) and CNN iReport, an app that allows regular people to upload photos and videos and take part in the news creation process.
