Don’t find that measly 4-inch iPhone screen big enough? Then here’s some good news: Apple is reportedly testing several new iPhone displays, with sizes ranging from 4.8 to 6 inches.

The report comes from The Wall Street Journal, which says it has learned from sources that Apple is “willing to move ahead” with the development of larger screens.

For some time, the company has been hesitant to build screens larger than four inches. So why the change in attitude now?

It’s almost certain that Apple’s about-face has a lot to do with the excitement surrounding 6-inch Android phones from hardware manufacturers like HTC, Sony, Samsung and LG. All four of those firms are expected to release larger Android-based smartphones sometime in late 2013. (In fact, Samsung just unveiled the 5.7-inch Galaxy Note 3 earlier this week.)

Nokia, which was recently acquired by Microsoft and builds Windows Phone-based devices, is also looking to release a larger smartphone.

One thing’s for certain: Apple needs to figure out a way to stop the bleeding. The firm’s share of the smartphone market dropped from 19 per cent in last year’s second quarter to just 14 per cent this year.

It’s expected Apple will unveil the much-anticipated iPhone 5S and iPhone 5C at a media event on September 10. Maybe, just maybe, we’ll hear also more about a 6-inch iPhone.
