EA, America’s Most Hated Company, Finally Ditching Online Passes

Electronic Arts, America’s most unpopular company, is finally killing its Online Pass system. This means any game that came with a promo code that could be used a single time to unlock special content will now have that content unlocked.

The Online Pass system was designed to discourage people from selling or buying used games. A number of popular titles have used the system to offer “additional” content to people who bought a game new.

However, in some cases critical gameplay features weren’t available to those people who bought a game with the code already used. This would force a gamer to purchase the content for a fee.

In its most devious scenarios, Electronic Arts required people to use a code just to access multiplayer content.

No wonder the company ain’t so popular with gamers.

Well, now EA is doing away with Online Passes. It will even apply the changes to games retroactively, starting with EA Sports games.

“As we discontinue Online Pass for our new EA titles, we are also in the process of eliminating it from all our existing EA titles as well,” EA’s John Reseburg recently said. “We heard the feedback from players and decided to do away with Online Pass altogether.”

“Players will see it first with some EA Sports titles, where a prompt to enter an Online Pass code will no longer appear in-game; with other titles we are simply making Online Passes available free of charge online,” he added.

“These are rolling updates that are taking effect over the next several weeks. We hope players continue to enjoy our games and online services for a long time to come.”

Of course, the nagging question for many gamers is this: what about the poor schmoes who paid up to access that content? Do we get our money back?

Don’t count on it, guys.
