Amazon Placeholder Price for Xbox One, PlayStation 4 Is Frightening

Amazon’s UK division has set a price for Microsoft’s Xbox One and Sony’s PlayStation 4 consoles — and it ain’t cheap.

Amazon UK recently took to Twitter to tweetvertise Xbox One and PlayStation 4 pre-order options. Clicking through the link brings one to listings for the consoles where prices are set at a whopping £600.

No, that’s not for both consoles together — that’s for each one, separately. Converted to U.S. dollars, that’s over $900 per console.

You can certainly buy a lot for $900. Like what, you ask? Perhaps a lightweight new ultrabook PC with dedicated graphics memory. Perhaps a desktop gaming PC with 16GB RAM and a 3GB video card. Perhaps a super-gaming-bundle consisting of an Xbox 360, PlayStation 3 and Nintendo Wii.

Heck, for $900 you could buy nine Android-based Ouya consoles and two Nvidia Shields.

The good news: Amazon has admitted these are not final prices for the Xbox One or PS4. The company says that anyone who places a pre-order for £600 will be reimbursed if the price drops between now and the consoles’ ultimate launch date sometime this fall.

“Please note that there are no official prices announced for Xbox One [and Playstation 4] products,” Amazon noted in a disclaimer.

“The price stated … is a placeholder. With our Pre-order Price Guarantee, you can order now and if the price decreases between the time you place your order and the release date, you’ll be charged the lowest price.”
