In the entire history of the WNBA, no player has dunked the ball more than twice. In the first game of her rookie season, Phoenix Mercury center and No. 1 overall draft pick in the 2013 WNBA Draft Brittney Griner tied the all-time record. In her first game!
Here are both of her dunks:
Yeah, yeah, yeah… Both were uncontested and nobody got posterized. Sure, these aren’t monster dunks by current NBA standards (though I’d argue that the second is actually pretty sick). That totally misses the point, though.
Griner has one career game under her belt and she already holds an all-time career record. That shouldn’t even be possible to accomplish. The NBA doesn’t keep dunks as an official stat, but the best league’s best dunkers record more than 100 every season. What’s the most dunks an NBA rookie’s ever thrown down in his debut game — three or four, maybe?
At 6’8″ tall and athletic as hell, Griner has the ability to dominate the WNBA like few athletes have ever dominated their sport. It’s still the WNBA, of course, so not many people will see her do it. But she’s going to do it.
