Would Mark Cuban Really Draft Brittney Griner?

Gasp with shock — Mark Cuban is running his mouth again. What he says doesn’t always make perfect sense, but, within the framework of his unique logic, most things he says possess at least some merit. But not this time. Not this.

On Tuesday night, Cuban was answering a few questions before the Mavericks vs. Lakers game, stating that he would draft Baylor center Brittney Griner (a woman, for those not paying attention) if she were the “best on the board.”

Cuban went on to claim that he wouldn’t be interested in simply carrying Griner on his roster as a publicity stunt, but that he would give her an opportunity to make the squad after playing in the NBA Summer League.

An opportunity? Really, Mark? This is asinine. Sorry, my lady friends. This isn’t a knock on women. This is a knock on Cuban, who is once again looking to step into the spotlight and plug in his marketing machine. It’s a knock on Cuban who, based on his own curiosity, wants to use Griner as a sideshow attraction to sell tickets for the NBA Summer and Development Leagues.

In no way would this benefit the career of Griner. At 6’8″, Griner is one of the most dominant female players to ever step on the court. Yet, any argument in favor of her succeeding in the NBA would be based on what we wish the world to be. Griner would be of average height in the NBA when compared to her peers. Technically, she would be considered grossly undersized for her position. Then there are the issues of speed, quickness, physicality and brute strength in comparison to the NBA forwards and big men.

The biggest reason Cuban won’t be drafting Griner in the 2013 NBA Draft, which is in June? There’s this little thing called the WNBA Draft on April 15.

Despite all of this, it sounds like Griner wouldn’t be opposed to getting the shot. She recently took to Twitter to share her own thoughts on the matter.
