Is Jerry Seinfeld still relevant in the comedy world?

It feels like he hasn’t produced anything of value in decades — since Seinfeld, basically. Remember Bee Movie? It was terrible. His new web show, Comedians in Cars Getting Coffee, is boring as hell. The whole thing with him loving classic cars and owning dozens of them is pretty much the least relatable thing ever — and stand-ups typically need to be relatable in order for their comedy to work.

Every time he gets interviewed and talks about his “process,” he sounds like one of the most pretentious a**holes in the world.

Despite all this, his name still carries significant weight in the comedy world. When he does something new, people pay attention — long enough, at least, to verify that his new endeavor isn’t the return to glory that so many expect him to one day achieve.

On last night’s Tonight Show With Jay Leno, Seinfeld debuted five minutes of new stand-up:

Well, it’s definitely Seinfeld material. He’s making an overt attempt to break out all his fan-favorite mannerisms.

The actual jokes are pretty weak, though. They’re watered-down Seinfeld jokes, which is exactly what you’d expect them to be. They feel like a new album from a classic rock band who peaked in the ’70s, but is somehow still making new (and irrelevant) music. They feel like your uncle doing a decent Seinfeld impression.

Maybe we’ll one day see Seinfeld recapture the magic he once had, but it’s not this day. As long as he owns all those cars, it’s probably not going to happen.
