New Samsung Galaxy S 4 Smartphone Scrolls by Tracking Eye Movement

The next big gimmick in smartphone technology: displays that scroll up and down according to eye and not finger movements. It’s expected that this feature will make its way into the new Samsung Galaxy S 4 smartphone, which should be introduced later this month.

According to an anonymous Samsung employee, the new Galaxy phone will use a person’s eyes to determine when and where they want to scroll.

Here’s how it works: imagine that you’re reading a news story on your phone and you get to the bottom of the page. Rather than having to take the time to scroll down with your thumb, the phone detects that your eyes have reached the end and scrolls down automatically.

The best part of this feature may be that it will keep your smartphone display relatively clear of greasy fingerprint smudges.

The Samsung employee didn’t go into detail about how the technology worked, but insisted that more would be known about it once Samsung unveils the Galaxy S 4 at a New York City press event on March 14.

Recent trademark filings by Samsung back up the worker’s story. In January, the company filed for a trademark for the name “Eye Scroll.” Samsung has also filed a trademark for “Eye Pause,” but it remains unknown what the heck that means.

Samsung chief product officer Kevin Packingham refused to comment on the Galaxy S 4’s features in a recent interview, though he did say that it was “an amazing phone.”

We’ll see about that.

  1. Definitely looking forward to this. I can’t wait to switch my current phone for this one. The S3 is also amazing but to have this one will be even more amazing can’t wait to see the design and what else it has to offer.
