Josh Hamilton Says He Got In Shape By “Juicing” – Um, What?

Uh, Josh… you might want to rephrase that.

When asked by a reporter for the Orange County Register about how he managed to slim down, Major League Baseball star and new member of the Los Angeles Angels of Anaheim (still the stupidest name in all of sports) Josh Hamilton credited “the juicing stuff.”

Calm down, Angels fans. Hamilton means drinking juice. Cleansing.

He most certainly does not mean steroids.

Hamilton showed up to spring training weighing about 225 pounds, which is decidedly less than the 245 to 250 he played at in previous seasons. He revealed that he’s cut bread out of his diet and is now focused on eating more fruits and vegetables.

Presumably, he’s blending these fruits and vegetables up into a drinkable form — hence, “juicing.”

“The Lord kept waking me up in the middle of the night over a month and every time I’d wake up there’d be a doctor on talking about what you put in your body and how it makes you feel,” the devoutly religious Hamilton said.

“And then the juice lady was on. It was like, ‘Alright, I always pray the Lord will help me feel better. Well, that’s all great, but am I doing my part?’ Now its time for me to do my part.”

Though Hamilton’s battles with alcohol and narcotics have been well documented, there’s no reason to suspect that he’s getting any assistance from performance-enhancing drugs at this time. Frankly, if he was juicing in the way that means using anabolic steroids or growth hormone, it’s likely he would be adding weight and not shedding it.

Still, Hamilton would be wise to choose better words when describing his dieting regimen in the future. Considering the current state of heightened awareness of performance-enhancing drug use in baseball, he has to be smarter than that.
