Sony Inviting Us to ‘See the Future’ February 20 – It’s Probably the PlayStation 4

It appears we’ll catch our first glimpse of the PlayStation 4 sooner than we originally thought. Sony has released a teaser video (see below) that hints at a major unveiling on February 20, 2013.

Sony is reportedly inviting gamers to “see the future” in a New York City event on February 20. Presumably, we’ll be privy to more details than are outlined in the teaser trailer, which includes little more than swirling PlayStation logos.

As for speculation (there’s lots of that), a recent report suggests the PS4’s controller will include a “share” button that will give gamers the ability to immediately post screenshots and videos to the web.

In fact, that same report indicates that the PS4 will automatically record the gameplay video every 15 minutes. If such a system was, in fact, a part of the PS4, it would indicate that Sony wants its next console to act as something of a YouTube/Facebook hybrid. Certainly, it would benefit Sony if gamers were constantly uploading videos recorded on their PlayStation 4s.

Of course, there are also rumors that Sony’s PS4 controller will include a massive touch screen and will therefore closely resemble the Wii U’s controller.

As for launch timing rumors, sources indicate that both Japanese and American gamers will have a chance to get their hands on the PS4 before the holiday season. It’s expected that European gamers will have to wait until early 2014.

With Sony throwing down the gauntlet, it should be interesting to see how Microsoft responds. Earlier reports indicated that Sony and Microsoft would show off their new consoles in March; is it possible Sony’s February 20 unveiling will force Microsoft to bump up its Xbox 720 reveal date?

We’ll just have to wait and see.
