Xbox 720, PlayStation 4 to Cost Gamers $350 to $400, Analyst Says

Earlier today, reports emerged suggesting that the next generation of video game consoles, including the Sony PlayStation 4 and Microsoft Xbox 720, could be unveiled as early as March 2013.

Now, one analyst has predicted that such hardware could retail for between $350 and $400.

That prediction is coming from Colin Sebastian of analyst firm Robert W. Baird. He’s basing his estimation on conversations with video game developers and distributors at the Consumer Electronics Show in Las Vegas last week.

According to Sebastian, his discussions resulted in “interesting takeaways with respect to next-generation game development and more broadly, the intensifying battle for the living room.”

Besides pegging prices for the Xbox 720 and PS4, Sebastian says his convos have led him to predict that the two consoles will use “off-the-shelf” top-tier PC components. He also believes both consoles will embrace voice recognition and motion sensor technology.

Admittedly, any video gamer with their ear to the ground could have made these predictions. The Xbox 360, which debuted in 2005, cost $400 at the time of its release. The PlayStation 3 was $500 when it first hit the market a year later.

Motion-sensitive technology has been “in” for several years now, though both the Kinect and the Move are regarded as satisfactory-at-best pieces of hardware.

Finally, Sebastian weighed in on the Wii U, suggesting the Nintendo console could be in tough against new consoles from Microsoft and Sony.

Again, not exactly a bold prediction.

Here’s my bold take: the Xbox 720 and PlayStation 4 will make the Wii U virtually obsolete. Good god, don’t buy that thing.
