Microsoft Teases Gamers with Xbox 720 Countdown Clock

We’ve been speculating for months now about the possible release date for a next-generation Microsoft video game console. Microsoft has finally given us a hint, and all indications point to a major reveal at this year’s Electronic Entertainment Expo (E3).

Okay, first off — we really don’t know a heck of a lot more than we did yesterday. But what we do know is this: Microsoft spokesperson and public personality Major Nelson has posted a giant countdown timer on his blog.

Above the timer, Nelson has simply noted: “And it’s on…”

The timer is currently set at 159 days, which means it should reach zero on June 11.

Oh, and E3 — the venue used by most gaming companies to reveal new products — runs from June 11-13. Fancy that.

Visitors to Major Nelson’s blog certainly believe this means Microsoft will be revealing a new Xbox at E3.

“New Xbox yesssss,” notes commenter Stephen Robinson, while someone named “cameron” says “AKA 159 days until the next Xbox is shown.”

I’d have to agree. The current Xbox is now more than seven years old. Some developers are starting to complain that they’ve effectively maxed out the technology packaged inside the Xbox 360 and PlayStation 3.

So, what do you want from a new Xbox? I’ll be looking for all the usual bells and whistles, but I’m also hoping Microsoft decides to ditch its expensive Xbox Live Gold platform in favor of something a little more basic and free.

If that’s not the case, I might be just a tad more excited to see what Sony has in store for for us.
