Ali G Returns to Accept Sacha Baron Cohen’s British Comedy Award (VIDEO)

The British Comedy Awards were handed out last night in — you totally guessed it — Britain. Receiving this year’s Outstanding Achievement in Comedy award, which recognizes the lifetime achievement of a comedian, was Sacha Baron Cohen. Curiously, the actor-comedian no-showed the event.

Accepting the award in his place was an individual who’s been conspicuously absent from the comedy scene in recent years (and, interestingly, has never been seen in the same room as Baron Cohen), Ali G.

The acceptance speech was pure Ali G gold, with all the incredibly sharp, envelope-pushing punchlines you’d expect, mixed with the usual few British jokes that make no sense to a North American (what the hell is Savile?).

The whole thing is a must-watch for fans of comedy. Check it out:

Will this performance create enough buzz to give us one more series (season, in North American terms) of Da Ali G Show? Probably not; this was likely just a one-time thing.

Still, a few of Baron Cohen’s recent projects have fallen much closer to flop territory than to mega-hit status, both in the eyes of the critics and at the box office. Perhaps he’s considering a revival of the character that got everything started for him.
