Get Ready for More Punishment, You Sick Masochistic Weirdo: Dark Souls 2 En Route

The original Dark Souls recently made Manolith’s list of the most infuriatingly difficult video games of all time. Well, get ready for more pain: Dark Souls 2 is reportedly coming soon.

From Software’s Dark Souls was something of a sequel to Demon’s Souls, a PlayStation 3 exclusive that took gamers through a haunting and dangerous medieval world. Like Demon’s Souls, 2011’s Dark Souls was extremely difficult, forcing gamers to calculate every blow and block in order to survive.

Personally, I enjoyed the game for a while — but eventually came to the realization that I was spending more of my leisurely video game time swearing at the screen than actually enjoying myself. That’s when I traded Dark Souls in for a used copy of Deus Ex: Human Revolution. I don’t regret that decision.

Nevertheless, Dark Souls has been embraced by many gamers precisely because of its difficulty level. Many gamers believe it harkens back to a bygone video game era, when games like Ninja Gaiden and Mega Man showed players little mercy. Though that made them tough and frustrating titles to play through, beating them was, for many, a deeply rewarding experience.

And, at the end of the day, Dark Souls was a financial success. Back in March, publisher Namco Bandai announced that more than a million copies of the game had sold since its fall 2011 release.

From Software makes clear that the new Dark Souls will take place in an “unfamiliar setting” and will feature “epic battles with gruesome enemies.” The developer also promises an improved multiplayer mode that will “put a distinct Dark Souls II twist on the concept of playing with others.”

An official release date for Dark Souls 2 remains unknown.
