Seattle Police Tell Residents It’s Cool to Get Baked, Order Pizza, Watch ‘LOTR’

Thanks to a new law in Washington state that takes effect today — a law that might be short-lived, if the feds have anything to say about it — possession of up to an ounce of marijuana is now, essentially, legal for adults over the age of 21.

In a move that’s actually pretty awesome, the Seattle police department is embracing the new reality — as long as people are responsible in when and where they get totally blitzed.

Seattle police spokesman Jonah Spangenthal-Lee posted a message on the Seattle Police Department Blotter that has to be the coolest thing any cop has ever said:

“The police department believes that, under state law, you may responsibly get baked, order some pizzas and enjoy a ‘Lord of the Rings’ marathon in the privacy of your own home, if you want to.”

Pot, pizza, rings of power and police permission… what more could anyone ask for?

It’s still illegal to actually smoke pot in public, but officers in Seattle have been instructed to simply issue warnings to anyone they catch lighting up: “Until further notice, officers shall not take any enforcement action — other than to issue a verbal warning — for a violation of I-502.”

A cop politely asking a stoner to smoke up inside? You know, that’s such a radical idea that it just might work.
