First ‘Star Trek Into Darkness’ Trailer Hits the Web (VIDEO)

Here it is, Trekkers and Trekkies (or whatever you want to be called): the first trailer for Star Trek Into Darkness, the sequel to the 2009 J.J. Abrams reboot of the Star Trek franchise starring Christopher Pine, Zachary Quinto and a bunch of other reasonable facsimiles of the original Star Trek characters.

Speculation about this plot of this film has been in overdrive for years now, and this trailer isn’t likely to slow it down. The question everyone is asking is still the same: is the villain, played by Benedict Cumberbatch, Khan Noonien Singh? Though sources close to the movie (like Simon Pegg) have been denying that Khan is in the film, it appears more likely than ever that Cumberbatch’s character is, indeed, Khan. The “I have returned” line in the trailer would certainly fit with that narrative.

Then, of course, there are fans arguing that Cumberbatch’s character is Gary Mitchell. The trailer doesn’t rule out that possibility, either — and, in fact, seems to support it, given that we see a shot of Cumberbatch wearing a Starfleet uniform.

As for how the rest of the movie looks, it certainly seems to be filled with action, doesn’t it? Some fans have remarked that it looks much more like a typical summer action flick, like G.I. Joe or Battleship, than it does a Star Trek movie, though. It’s got the fire, the explosions, the shots of a city getting destroyed and in front of stunned onlookers. It’s even got the Inception horn!

Is relentless action what Star Trek fans want from a movie? Probably not. Star Trek needs to be smart and it needs to deal with issues of morality and humanity. All of that stuff might be in the final cut, but we don’t really seem much of it in the trailer. That’s to be expected, though — the target audience for this movie has to be much wider than just Star Trek fans. This is the time to reel in the general moviegoing audience, not just self-described sci-fi nerds.
