Please don’t screw this up. Please don’t screw this up.

Yes, Hollywood is making Ender’s Game, the beloved Orson Scott Card novel about humanity’s preparation for a third war with insectoid aliens called the Formics, into a movie. That fact has fans of the book very nervous, to say the least.

The film adaptation of Ender’s Game is said to follow the novel very closely. Some stuff will change — it’s probably safe to say there won’t be any nude, young boys fighting each other on-screen — but that’s to be expected. What matters is that the core elements of the story receive the proper treatment.

Harrison Ford, recently named one of Manolith’s 5 Secret Man Crushes It’s Totally Okay to Have, is starring in the movie. His presence is reassuring, as he’s starred in, oh, you know, one or two decent sci-fi films in his time. Orson Scott Card’s involvement as a producer is another sign that the flick might actually be pretty damn good.

With all of that said, perhaps the best strategy for fans of the book is to convince yourself that Hollywood will somehow mess it all up. Lower your expectations as much as you can, so that you can be pleasantly surprised. And, if the movie is actually good or even great, you’ll be blown away.
