Have You Heard? Steve Nash Has a Dashing New Nickname

With three decades of NBA experience, one would expect Steve Nash to have a firmly established nickname. Nash is arguably one of Canada’s greatest exports — he’s right up there with Rachel McAdams — but it turns out that he never earned a nickname… until now.

Nash is rapidly approaching the ripe old age of 40. But, being a fella who enjoys relatively clean lifestyle and plays a game that is relatively close to the floor, the Lakers point guard may have a couple years left in the tank if he can stay healthy. It’d be nice to refer to him by a cool nickname as his career wanes.

In years past, Nash has often started the season with a cropped hair-do, allowing it to grow out as the season progresses. When the playoffs roll around, he’s usually one of the longer-haired players in the league. Not this season, though.

The incredibly stylish Nash has been in suit and tie while injured on the sidelines. To compliment the suit, the Nash’s current coif is a classic. So classic, in fact, that it triggered Kobe Bryant to offer up a new nickname for the veteran point guard: “Gatsby.”

“I’m not working too hard, to be honest with you. The shots that I made were all jumpers. It doesn’t take much energy to knock those jumpers down,” Kobe told reporters recently.

“Bringing the ball up and having me kind of initiate the offense and score and stuff like that, it’s making me work a little more than I will when “Gatsby” gets back… When “Gatsby” gets back, I don’t have to do that. The game’s going to become even more easy for me.”

Kobe’s reference is obviously taken from the F. Scott Fitzgerald classic, The Great Gatsby, and the title character, Jay Gatsby.

Steve Nash as the NBA’s Jay Gatsby? Gotta admit. I’m buying it.
