Jim Harbaugh Undergoing Procedure for Irregular Heartbeat

49ers fans thought Alex Smith was the team’s No. 1 health concern, but it seems that some recent developments have flipped the script.

Coach Jim Harbaugh, the gritty former NFL quarterback who was awarded NFL Coach of the Year after his first season, was found to have an irregular heartbeat on Wednesday night. Doctor’s weren’t so concerned that they prepped him for treatment immediately, but he was ordered to come back on Thursday to endure a “minor procedure” to help repair the problem.

The team wasn’t informed of the issue until Thursday morning film sessions, so it seems that the procedure is nothing out of the ordinary and nothing to be too concerned about.

I’m not really sure what it all means, or what the procedure Harbaugh is set to undergo will entail. I suppose it could be a pacemaker, or some other procedure. I’m not a cardiologist, but I’m sure the capable staff at Stanford Medical has the situation under control.

I do enjoy seeing Jim Harbaugh on the sideline. His faces always get a comparable reaction from me, and a response from whoever catches a glimpse of me as I watch Harbaugh.

“You OK, man?”
“Yeah. I’m fine. Harbaugh is getting that look.”

He was always one of my favorites to watch in the 80s and 90s. Here’s hoping for a speedy recovery.

According to the 49ers brass, Coach Harbaugh will be back at the team’s facility tomorrow. They did not state whether or not he would be leading practice. Media outlets also tried contacting the Harbaugh family — his father didn’t even know about the issue or the procedure.

This could potentially affect the NFC West as Seattle is hitting a stride. The 49ers face the Chicago Bears this weekend and travel to New Orleans after that. With Smith a question mark due to his concussion, and doctors orders for Harbaugh serving as a present mystery, it will be interesting to see how second-year QB Colin Kaepernick responds to the responsibility.

Knowing Coach Harbaugh, he’ll be running and doing push-ups with the quarterbacks tomorrow afternoon.
