Another week, another wild swing in the national perception of Jay Cutler.

The Chicago Bears quarterback has, at times, been called both the next great quarterback and a bust. His throwing talent is undeniable (he possesses an arm that is quite possibly the best in football), but his maturity and toughness have both been questioned repeatedly.

Just a few weeks ago, Cutler was spotted on the sidelines rudely ignoring his coach. Earlier in the season, he was caught on camera screaming in the face of one of his offensive linemen. “The real Jay Cutler is showing through,” said pretty much everyone.

Now, the pendulum has swung and everyone love Jay Cutler again. Last night, Cutler absorbed a legal, though arguably dirty, tackle from Detroit Lions defensive tackle Ndamukong Suh. It looked like it hurt a lot:

Cutler had to leave the game for x-rays, but he soon returned and led his Bears to an impressive win. Now everyone’s talking about how tough Cutler is and what a great leader he is, when the exact opposite has been argued numerous times in the past.

Cutler’s also being called a great guy today because news emerged that he made a point of visiting with the family of a Bears fan who was murdered while traveling to the Jacksonville area to support his favorite team.

ESPN Chicago reports that Cutler invited the family of the murder victim to last night’s game and spoke with them prior to kickoff.

“We wanted to reach out and bring them to the game,” Cutler told ESPN. “It’s a tough situation. There’s nothing I or anyone can say that can really ease their pain or bring anybody back. Hopefully we were able to let them have an enjoyable time for three or four hours and kind of forget their loss and just have a good time and help them in that way because it’s hard.”

Christopher Pettry, 42, was fatally stabbed at Fionn MacCool’s, a restaurant in the Jacksonville. He left behind a wife and three children.

Matthew Hinson, 28, has been charged with murder.
