Report: Mike Holmgren Fired Already, Pat Shurmur Next?

Since the news broke that Tennessee businessman Jimmy Haslam was set to purchase the Cleveland Browns from Randy Lerner, rumors began swirling that the entire Browns front office would soon be looking for work. With the sale getting official approval earlier today, all indications are that those rumors are true.

According to multiple sources, Haslam will move quickly to name Joe Banner (formerly of the Philadelphia Eagles) the new team CEO and fire current team president Mike Holmgren. Allegedly, the decision has already been made and it will be announced within 24 hours.

Current Browns head coach Pat Shurmur could soon follow Holmgren out the door. Though he hasn’t been a complete flop in his current role, the Browns are just 1-5. More importantly, Shurmur is Holmgren’s guy and it’s likely that Banner will want to fill his coaching staff with men he’s familiar with and trusts.

Shurmur’s firing may not come immediately–it would make more sense for the Browns to keep him until the end of the season, when there will be more potential replacements looking for work. It appears inevitable, however, barring a miraculous run that would see the Browns qualify for the playoffs for the first time in a decade.

Interestingly, Andy Reid, a man who worked with Joe Banner in Philadelphia, might be looking for work come early 2013. Reid’s Eagles are 3-3, but things appear to be falling apart in Philly. Earlier today, Reid fired his oft-criticized defensive co-ordinator, Juan Castillo. The Eagles’ brass has made it clear that anything less than a deep playoff run will mean the end of Reid’s employment.

Would the Browns have interest in Reid? The pairing would certainly make a lot of sense.
