The highly-controversial Miley Cyrus hosted Saturday Night Live on Saturday, and people were freaking out about the 45-minute delay. Did you manage to wait 45 minutes aka 3/4 of a “Keeping Up With The Kardashians” episode? America loves some Kardashians. Saturday Night Live started late due to college football, and the country got their fix of good ol’ Miley.
Personally, I love the “new” Miley. I can certainly understand how parents or anyone over forty years of age might have a problem with her antics, but here is some truth: she is twenty years old. Yes, Miley Cyrus is, and has been, a world-famous pop star whether you like her her past music or hate it. The problem for Miley has been her teeny-bopper past, and trying to break out of that image. What happens? Oh, just an American freak-out about the antics of Cyrus on the MTV VMA’s. What a strange concept, right? A twenty-year old pop star, who is trying to create a new identity, does something wild on a huge stage such as the MTV VMA’s? Yeah, she is clearly crazy, and probably not aware of how the business works. Oh yeah, she has a new album in stores TODAY. It’s almost as if her public relations team took a long vacation, and then one day someone said, “Oh, shit. Does anybody know where Miley is? She’s in her sploons on the VMA’s? Damn, why didn’t anyone keep track of her? Let’s hope publicity doesn’t suffer.” Love her or hate her – Miley Cyrus knows exactly what she’s doing. This happens with every young pop star, only now we live in a world of constant feedback (and criticism). We always need something to talk about…and Miley Cyrus is providing the goods.
I’m assuming most people have seen the show, or least some of the clips, so I don’t need to breakdown the episode.
Best Cast Member Impression: Jay Pharaoah as Will Smith in Cold Open
This is an impression that young me would spend hours practicing trying to perfect. The new me only spent about 30 minutes yesterday, but I am getting there. I’m also white, so there is that. We need Jay Pharaoh in more skits.
Best Rookie Performance: Kyle Mooney in Miley Cyrus Sex Tape
I hate you, Kyle Mooney, I hate you. How about this guy? It’s his second episode, and he is feeling up Miley Cyrus in her bra. I wish I could have been in the writer’s room:
“So, Kyle. We’re going to do the sketch you wrote.”
“You are? I mean, we are? I am doing sketch I wrote?”
“Yeah, Miley is on board. She wants to maintain the edgy vibe, so you’re in luck. I like the way your mind works, Mooney. You’re a thinker is what you are. Always thinking about what’s the best for the show.”
“Yes, best for the show.” (walks out and mumbles to himself, “Thank you!”)
So, then it happened. Maybe Kyle Mooney only lasts one season, but he has this sketch.
