Academy Award-winner Ben Affleck is set to take on the role of Batman in the upcoming Man of Steel 2, a sequel to this summer’s Superman blockbuster.
Both director Zack Snyder and lead actor Henry Cavill will return for the second Man of Steel. Also starring in the film: Amy Adams, Laurence Fishburne and Diane Lane. The film will reportedly focus on the evolving relationship between Batman and Superman.
This isn’t the first time Affleck has played a superhero. You may recall he played the lead in the 2003 film Daredevil, which also starred Affleck’s current wife, Jennifer Garner (the two were married in 2005). Unfortunately, that film wasn’t exactly milestone material — in fact, its current Rotten Tomatoes rating is a miserable 45 per cent.
That said, Affleck garnered plenty of praise for his handling of Argo, a film about the 1979 operation that successfully freed U.S. hostages from revolutionary Iran. Affleck both starred in and directed Argo, which received critical acclaim (but was hardly an accurate depiction of real-life events).
Warner Bros. President of Production Greg Silverman is pleased Affleck is on board with the next Man of Steel.
“We knew we needed an extraordinary actor to take on one of DC Comics’ most enduringly popular superheroes, and Ben Affleck certainly fits that bill, and then some,” Silverman said. “His outstanding career is a testament to his talent and we know he and Zack will bring new dimension to the duality of this character.”
Man of Steel 2 is expected to hit theaters sometime in 2015.
So, is a Ben Affleck/Henry Cavill pairing your ideal Batman/Superman 1-2 punch?
