Iconic Comedian Dave Attell Returns to TV

For a long time, one of the funniest men ever to make his appearance on TV was Dave Attell. Now, with the return of Who’s Line Is It Anyway? and other classic comedy shows, it makes sense for the most grizzled of the old guard to return.

Attell has been slugging it out in comedy clubs for most of his career, first appearing on HBO Specials, then doing sets in New York’s most iconic comedy venues.

Though his contemporaries included people like Jon Stewart and Sarah Silverman, Attell’s humor didn’t translate into hyper-lucrative television deals. Instead, he had the bizarre and incredible late-night viewing experience that was Insomniac With Dave Attell.

The show was an extension of the man’s stand-up career: he’d take camera crews to whatever city he was performing in, and after his stand-up set, hit everything interesting, disturbing or hilariousthat was around town to hit.

He did it around the country, then the globe, proving that when you’re a plucky dude from New York with a razor-sharp wit, the world is your oyster. So you should shuck and eat those oysters at 2 in the morning, while heavily intoxicated, with a group of strangers dressed like members of the Village People.

Awesome moments from the show include Dave stumbling across an underground sex club, visiting S & M dungeons, enjoying late-night eats and hanging out with other comics — essentially, a peek into what life is like for a comic on the road, edited of the explicit encounters.

Comedy Central just ordered another late night show with Attell, plus another stand-up special, so at last more funny is in the works.

To celebrate Attell’s return to television, here are five of his most hilarious moments.
