If you made a list of video games that deserved to be processed into movies by the Hollywood meat grinder, what titles would top your list?
Halo, Diablo, Warcraft, Mass Effect, The Last of Us, Hotline Miami all come to mind. But not Gran Turismo.
And yet, it appears a film based on the long-running and popular PlayStation racing franchise is in the works.
Hollywood industry publication The Wrap reports the film is being produced by Fifty Shades of Grey producers Mike De Luca and Dana Brunetti — suggesting the film will feature people seducing each other and having sex in their cars for two hours.
Sony executives are reportedly keeping a close eye on the film’s development.
There’s no word yet on who might star in the film.
Insiders suggest the film will attempt to recreate the success of The Fast and Furious franchise. In any case, it’s unlikely a Gran Turismo movie could possibly reflect the actual game, which features a minimalist storyline and basically involves players collecting as many sports cars as possible.
If it’s completed and released by the start of 2014 the film will be able to feed off the release of Gran Turismo 6, which is due to hit the PlayStation 3 (and not the PlayStation 4) this coming fall. A demo of the game is currently available on the PlayStation Network.
That said, Sony hasn’t ruled out the possibility of releasing a PS4 version of Gran Turismo 6 sometime in the future.
