I’ve been to dozens of Major League Baseball games in my life. I’ve never caught a foul ball. Heck, I’ve barely even gotten a sniff of a foul ball. I’ve even shown up early and parked myself in the outfield bleachers with the sole intention of catching a batting practice home run. Still no balls. Those suckers are hard to come by.
So, you can surely understand my frustration upon hearing that a Cleveland Indians fan named Greg Van Niel caught four foul balls during yesterday’s game between the Tribe and the Kansas City Royals (which Cleveland won 6-4). Heck, you probably feel exactly the same way I do.
Van Niel is an Indians season ticket holder and he says he’s never before caught a foul ball at Progressive Field.
He must have cashed in a lifetime of good karma before the karma bank closed on Friday, because now he has four official baseballs in his collection.
Here are his own words, describing his crazy afternoon at the ballpark:
Three of them were catches and one was a ball I picked up off the ground. The third one I think was the hardest one – I think I ended up sprawled across a few rows, and I got some cheese on myself. But the other ones were just a matter of being in the right place at the right time.
Interestingly, Van Niel wasn’t in his usual seat on Sunday. He took advantage of the Indians’ season ticket exchange program and sat in Progressive Field’s section 160, which is down the third-base line.
As you can see in the video below, Van Niel gave away the fourth ball he nabbed. At some point, I suppose you have to pay forward some of your ridiculously good karma.
