The first gameplay trailer for the upcoming Mad Max video game has finally been released. The video (which is titled “Soul of a Man”) features top-notch production values and shows off the game’s main features — including vehicular combat and an open-world environment.
Mad Max is set for a 2014 release and will be available for next-gen consoles like the Xbox One and PlayStation 4, as well as the Xbox 360, PlayStation 3 and PC.
So, will it be any good?
On one hand, there’s lots to be excited about here. The trailer shows off some pretty stunning visuals featuring the kind of brutal vehicular combat found in the Mad Max films. The companies behind the game, including publisher Warner Bros. Interactive and developer Avalanche Studios, have announced that players will be able to customize and upgrade their rides as the game progresses.
But there are also reasons to be concerned that this one will run off track. For one, the game’s developer, Avalanche Studios, hardly boasts a flawless track record. Its most recent title was 2011’s Renegade Ops, a mostly well-reviewed budget-priced game for Xbox Live, PSN and PC.
Avalanche Studios also worked on Just Cause and Just Cause 2, open-world games set in present-day tropical environments. Although Just Cause received poor reviews, Just Cause 2 was credited for overcoming many of the original game’s problems.
Second, although the gameplay trailer features some impressive visuals, it’s not clear if they’re from next-gen consoles or the Xbox 360 and PlayStation 3. If the former, they’re actually not that impressive.
(Also, there’s not enough actual gameplay in that trailer.)
In any case, this is one title that should draw lots of attention when it’s released next year.
