The fellas affectionately known as Pearl Jam have run the gamut. I think back to my purchase of their first studio album, Ten, in 1991, then my subsequent runs to the record store to score the follow-ups, Vs. and Vitalogy, in the fall of 1993 and 1994 respectively.
Because of those influential releases, I’ve always associated the autumn equinox with listening to Pearl Jam. To this day, October isn’t complete without Saturdays of college football and barbecuing to the accompaniment of Eddie Vedder, Jeff Ament, Stone Gossard, Mike McCready and … whoever happened to be playing drums.
I’m not anything close to the Pearl Jam fan I once was, but I must admit, when PJ announced their new album would be released on October 15 of this year, I enjoyed an instant jolt of nostalgia. Then to learn the album would be called Lightning Bolt and the band would be touring to accompany the release?
Well, I didn’t do anything out of the ordinary, but I did think about jumping up and down — getting excited like a more youthful me. You know? Thrusting my fists in the air and letting loose some random profanity like f-yeah!
You wanna hear the first release from Lightning Bolt? It’s called “Mind Your Manners,” and it’s legitimate rock. Enjoy.
