Happy Independence Day, my fellow Americans! And happy Independence day to those of you who are not U.S. citizens, but still love the United States of America and realize we citizens are not always well represented by our elected officials.

There’s a lot to love about America — especially on Independence Day. Nowhere else does a country celebrate independence by gathering on its shores to watch a few surprisingly fit individuals (and a few hosses) get down on a bunch of ground meat in the shape of a wiener. And if they do, I wouldn’t know — or care — because I’m an egocentric American, right?

That said, there has been one wiener eater who has absolutely throttled his competition over the past several years: Joey Chestnut.

Today, July 4, 2013, Joey Chestnut went big for the seventh consecutive year. How many weenies did Chestnut take down in the allotted time? 69! Yeah, you can’t make this stuff up. This was a record-breaking effort for Chestnut, who had twice eaten 68 hot dogs at the annual competition. His second place competitor, Matt Stonie, only put down 51.

If you want to take in the 10 minutes of wonder, you can hop over the WatchESPN.com and check out a replay. Is it worth it? How could it not be? It’s a dude shoveling 69 hot dogs and buns into his gullet in 10 minutes. F-yeah, America!
