Rockstar Games’ highly anticipated Grand Theft Auto V is an absolutely massive game. Just how big is it? According to a new report, it’s so big that Rockstar couldn’t actually fit it on a single Xbox 360 disc.
In fact, Rockstar has announced that the Xbox 360 version of Grand Theft Auto V will ship on not one, but two discs. However, the company also says players won’t have to swap out their discs while playing the game.
That’s because gamers will be required to perform a mandatory 8GB install from the game’s first disc before starting up GTAV for the first time.
This could present a major problem for people who have purchased the newer, slimmer Xbox 360 equipped with a 4GB hard drive. Rockstar says these folks will have to purchase a new and larger hard drive for their console or use a USB drive.
If they choose the latter, there will be conditions. “If using a USB flash drive it must be at least USB 2.0 with a minimum 15mb/s read speed and formatted for Xbox 360 use,” Rockstar noted in a recent Q&A blog post. “A new USB flash drive is recommended to ensure optimum performance.”
In any case, once the install is complete Xbox 360 users will use only the second disc to play the game.
Those of you playing GTAV on PlayStation 3 won’t have to deal with two discs because Sony’s console can handle higher-capacity Blu-ray discs. However, PS3 gamers will still have to perform the 8GB install.
Given that the PlayStation 3 has become somewhat notorious for its lengthy game install wait times, we can expect to twiddle our thumbs for quite a while before finally glimpsing the GTAV menu screen.
Grand Theft Auto V will be available for the PS3 and Xbox 360 on September 17, 2013.
