Once a game of vanilla schemes and predictable play on the field, college football is now a hotbed of innovation. There are gimmick offenses, crazy trick plays, blue fields and now totally insane facemasks. A sporting goods company called Bad-Ass Masks created the prototype facemask you see above, which features the logo of the Arizona Wildcats quite prominently. It’s either the worst facemask design in football history or the best — I can’t decide.
These Arizona logo facemasks are just prototypes and there’s certainly no guarantee they’ll ever see the field, but would it really be so crazy for Arizona to make the leap and actually put its players in these helmets? Colleges are constantly trying to one-up each other in the “cool” factor, as every little bit of extra attention and credibility can help with recruiting. Just ask Oregon.
If the blue and red version of this Arizona logo design is too crazy for you, how about an all-white facemask? Still too “out there?”
For decades, no one really gave a second thought to the reinforced plastic bars football players wear in front of their faces to ensure they leave each game with their jaw and facial features intact. Then a few NFL players busted out these post-apocalyptic cages and suddenly facemasks have become a way for players to express their individuality — and intimidate their opponents.
