Update: Aaaannnd it looks like all the details in our story below, which was reported on basically every tech site out there, have been debunked. It all stemmed from some Reddit user’s Xbox concept art. We still don’t know the name of the next Xbox — but it probably won’t be “Xbox Infinity.”

The new Xbox won’t be called the Xbox 720 after all: instead, it will be known as the Xbox Infinity, a new report suggests.
The International Business Times (U.K. division) reports it has learned from unnamed sources within Microsoft that the firm will announce the Xbox Infinity name when it shows off the new console at a special Spike TV event on May 21, 2013. It’s expected the new console will be available for purchase this fall, at roughly the same time Sony’s PlayStation 4 arrives at retailers.
A leaked image showing the name Xbox Infinity recently made its way to Reddit. Together, the reports indicate Microsoft has indeed decided to ditch several other possible names for the console, including Xbox 720, Durango (the console’s code name) and Next Xbox.
The report also indicates Microsoft has released Xbox Infinity development kits so software developers can begin working on games for the new console.
When contacted for a comment on the report, a Microsoft spokesperson said only, “We do not comment on rumors or speculation. We are always thinking about what is next for our platform, but we don’t have anything further to share at this time.”
Xbox Infinity has a certain ring to it, but what will Microsoft do when it inevitably releases a new console in five to seven years’ time? Will that become the Xbox Infinity 2?
