‘Black Sails’ Trailer: Michael Bay’s Pirate Show Looks Like ‘Game of Thrones’ on the High Seas (VIDEO)

Starz, the cable network with the brilliant foresight to cancel Party Down — one of the best (and least appreciated) television comedies in the past decade — had another great idea: ask loathed Hollywood director Michael Bay (Transformers) to come up with an hour-long action-adventure series.

That show is now upon us.

Well, the trailer is, at least. Black Sails won’t hit the small screen until 2014, but Starz wants all of us to have a look at it now.

Black Sails is set 20 years before the (fictional) events of Robert Louis Stevenson’s Treasure Island. It stars Zack McGowan, Hannah New and Jessica Parker Kennedy — in other words, a bunch of people you’ve never heard of.

The Bay-produced series is drawing more than a few comparisons to HBO’s gigantic smash hit Game of Thrones. The similarities are numerous and obvious: power struggles, sword fighting, bloody faces, scraggly hair and prostitutes aplenty.

If Black Sails is even half as good as Game of Thrones — a very tall order when you consider the crap that’s come from the man behind the show — it will be a smash for Starz.

  1. Everyone knows that all of the best entertainment comes from some executive saying, “We need a hit show like that one our competitor has. Find someone famous and tell them to make us one.” I’m sure it will be great.
