How do you follow up the only feature film you ever directed when the first one was a smash hit at the box office and one of the most innovative movies in years?
If you’re Neill Blomkamp, you don’t fall into a sophomore slump. Oh hell no.
Instead, you bring it.
2009’s District 9 was the South African director’s first feature-length movie. He wrote it and directed it. That’s what’s called coming out of the gates with guns blazing.
Now, four years later, Blomkamp is back with the trailer for his next film. Like District 9, it’s set in a version of earth’s future. This time, however, there are no aliens living in slums. Instead, the majority of humans live in squalor and filth on earth’s surface, while a minority of lucky people live in a floating paradise called Elysium — which just so happens to be the name of the film. This, unsurprisingly, doesn’t exactly sit well with those who are held down in the lower class, including a character played by Matt Damon.
Let’s stop wasting your time. Here’s the full trailer for Elysium:
Four years is a long time between films, but it certainly looks like this one will be worth the wait.
Elysium opens in theaters on August 9th.
