More NCAA Stupidity: Louisville Men Not Allowed to Attend Tonight’s Women’s Championship Game

Louisville’s men’s basketball team: you just won’t the NCAA title, so what are you going to do next?

You aren’t going to Disneyland, the stock answer of professional athletes coming off a major championship victory since New York Giants quarterback Phil Simms first uttered the phrase in 1987. That would be classified by the NCAA as an extra benefit — a huge no-no for student-athletes.

You aren’t going to New Orleans, either. Even though the Louisville women’s basketball team will compete for a national title against UConn in The Big Easy this evening, the newly crowned men’s team won’t be inside the arena.

You see, a trip down to Louisiana and tickets to the game would be an extra benefit.

Nevermind the fact that double titles are exceedingly rare in the NCAA. Nevermind the fact that men and women supporting each other is one of the best examples of sportsmanship and camaraderie in sports. The NCAA has its stupid rules and it’s committed to them.

Coach Rick Pitino will be on hand for tonight’s game, representing the entire men’s team. You can bet that he’ll be interviewed on television and he’ll have something to say about why he was forced to make the trip alone.
