A few weeks ago, the image of an Assassin’s Creed 4: Black Flag poster leaked to the press before developer Ubisoft could even announce that the game existed. Now, a leaked Battlefield 4 poster has shown the world that the popular shooter is headed back to PCs and consoles very soon.
The recent pre-order poster was first posted online by Chinese website Gamersky. It’s a promotional poster for retailer EB Games and clearly states that Battlefield 4 will be “available fall 2013.”
In addition, it notes that those who pre-order through EB Games will receive a pair of dog tags (whoop-de-doo!).
Neither developer DICE nor publisher Electronic Arts have confirmed that the game will actually ship this fall. However, given that the Call of Duty franchise — Battlefield’s main competitor — now receives an update each year, it wouldn’t be surprising to see a new DICE shooter before the end of 2013.
Unfortunately, such a short development cycle (Battlefield 3 was only released in late 2011) could mean that we won’t see any major updates or upgrades to the Battlefield formula. As a huge fan of the Battlefield series, I see that as a big concern.
I don’t know about you guys, but I’m also disappointed to see that EA and DICE no longer appear interested in the Bad Company series, which I found to be a fresh take on the increasingly stale modern first-person shooter genre. Unlike Battlefield 3 or Call of Duty: Black Ops/Modern Warfare, Battlefield: Bad Company featured humorous characters and a greater emphasis on destructible environments. In my opinion, 2010’s Bad Company 2 was vastly superior to 2011’s Battlefield 3.
In any case, we’ll see what EA and DICE have to say about the leaked poster in the coming days.
