Richard Williams, Father of Venus and Serena, Has Upped the Man Ante

Sweet mercy, I thought this story had to be a result of several errors. Nope. It’s real. So very real.

It’s time to recognize Richard Williams, the father of Venus and Serena, as a 71-year-old alpha!

The famous tennis pops, who taught his daughters how to play the racket sport, and ultimately helped change the face of women’s tennis, is a dad once again. He has fathered a child with his 33-year-old wife, Lakeisha Graham. The same woman who I always thought was Venus and Serena’s oldest sister. She’d often sit with the family and snag a little TV coverage during the Grand Slam tournaments.

This guy! He is not always the most well-spoken fella, but he’s a freakin’ visionary. We can save the debate on his tactics for another day. I’ll take this one on the chin, because I called him crazy for years. Maybe he is. He’s one of those guys who has always spouted “his own truth,” unfiltered and uncensored. Some of it has sounded like sheer idiocy, but clearly this guy has more mojo than dudes 40 years his junior.

Setting aside my past doubt for Williams’ enigmatic ways, allow me to fast-forward you 18 years, where we’ll see an 89-year-old Richard Williams once again sitting in Arthur Ashe Stadium at the U.S. Open, cheering on another 18-year-old Williams phenom, Dylan Starr Williams.

Love him or hate him, you gotta hope you possess half that mojo at 71.
