We found out yesterday that the Miami Dolphins have set a date — April 18 — for the official unveiling of their new logo and uniforms.
Today, we found out that we probably don’t have to wait until then. A mysterious Instagram user by the name of sneaker_pimp_simmons just posted a photo of what appears to be a brand-new Dolphins logo on a Nike jersey.
Here it is:
We’ve seen several purported new Dolphins logos “leak” in recent weeks, but each of them has been debunked as either a fan-made concept or, in the case of this logo, a possible prototype from the Dolphins’ logo redesign process (which the team has insisted is not the final logo).
This latest leak appears to be by far the most credible, however. It’s very similar to the leaked prototype, which suggests that it arose from the same creative process. The shading is a bit different and there’s now a visible eyeball, but the key elements remain the same: the dolphin is no longer wearing a helmet (like the current Dolphins logo), the sun “spokes” vary in size and the dolphin’s tail is upturned.
Fan reaction to the leaked logo has been mixed, with the primary point of contention being the upturned tail (which some have said gives the logo an “aquarium logo” feel).
There were rumors that the Dolphins went back to the drawing board after reaction to the first leaked prototype was negative, so perhaps the team will again make adjustments following this leak. That might be hard to do with so little time remaining before the official unveiling, however. The fact that this logo was leaked on a jersey suggests that Nike has already begun manufacturing 2013 Dolphins gear featuring the new imagery.
