A 19-year-old student was detained by police for three hours and schools in Beaver County, PA were placed on lock-down after a clueless employee at a nearby doctor’s office misheard the lyrics to the theme song to The Fresh Prince of Bel-Air and called 911.
The arrested student (who has not been identified) received a call from his doctor’s office to confirm an upcoming appointment. The call went to his voicemail, where he used a clip of the Fresh Prince theme song as his greeting.
The doctor’s office employee misheard the famous lyrics “shooting some b-ball outside of the school” as “shooting some people outside of the school” and alerted the police.
Apparently, this person had never seen an episode of the iconic show that ran for six years in the 1990s, still airs in re-runs and launched the career of the actor Forbes recently named the highest-paid in Hollywood. This poor person is entirely unfamiliar with the riveting lives of Will, Carlton, Uncle Phil, Aunt Viv and the two sisters who were super boring.
Also, this person apparently believes that potential school shooters rap about their murderous plans and use it as a voicemail greeting.
In other words, this person is probably an idiot. Or, at the very least, one of the most paranoid individuals in the country.
Police responded quickly to the 911 call, putting the county’s school on lock-down for 30 minutes before determining that there was no imminent threat. After being detained for three hours and questioned thoroughly, the student whose voicemail sparked the misunderstanding was released.
“[The student] was afraid and embarrassed. Obviously staff at the doctor’s office was embarrassed about the whole thing too,” said a member of the police force.
