News is still emerging from the Ural region of Russia, where a meteorite exploded — or was shot down, according to some reports — and pummeled cities below with fireballs.

Details about where, exactly, the meteorite came from — and why there seemed to be no warning of its approach — will surely emerge as the story unfolds.

For now, much of what we know about the event is from videos posted by Russian citizens whose cameras happened to be rolling at the time.

As with many natural disasters, the footage is so surreal and unprecedented, it brings to mind mindless apocalyptic Hollywood blockbusters like 2012 and The Day After Tomorrow.

Many more videos will certainly emerge over the coming hours and days, but here are six that convey the almost-unbelievabable strangeness the event.
