In this instance of man vs. nature, man definitely won.
The human victor in the video above, which was shot at the Swatch Skiers Cup 2013, is Sverre Liliequist. He’s a big mountain skiier from Stockholm, Sweden. It should go without saying that Liliequist is a professional and that you definitely shouldn’t try this at home.
Frankly, Liliequist probably shouldn’t have tried it, either. But, when you have balls big enough to fly up to the top of a huge, untamed mountain and then careen down it on what are essentially just two thin, fiberglass swords, I suppose the added courage it takes to do a backflip in the middle of an avalanche is negligible. Still, it makes for a pretty good video.
Liliequist actually triggered the avalanche in the video — and it’s probably safe to assume that he knew exactly what he was doing. That doesn’t make it any less life-threatening, though. If he had wiped out in the middle of it, he would have been buried under a buttload of snow and likely would have required an emergency rescue.
That’s all moot, though, since he finished his run like a boss and left the avalanche in his wake.
