Is everyone sick of Star Wars rumors yet? Not quite? Well, then here’s another: Yoda is getting his own movie.
The movie-loving nerds over at Ain’t It Cool News are reporting that the first Star Wars spin-off movie to feature a specific character will focus on Yoda, everyone’s favorite little green dude.
To clarify, we’re not talking about Episode VII — that’s still happening, still going to be directed by J.J. Abrams and will still feature all your favorite Star Wars characters. What we’re talking about are the rumored Star Wars spin-offs that will each feature one character going off and doing things on his or her own. You know, kind of like how everyone in The Avengers also gets his own movie.
Disney paid a lot of money for the rights to Star Wars and the company is going to milk it like nothing has ever been milked before.
AICN reports that not much has been decided about the plot of Yoda: The Movie — we don’t even know if it will feature a young Yoda or an old Yoda. Since Yoda can be rendered in CGI, it gives Disney a lot of freedom. Obviously, it wouldn’t be nearly as easy to do a spin-off about a young Han Solo or Luke Skywalker, unless Disney was prepared to re-cast those iconic roles (and that would be a very bad idea).
And, of course, there’s the merchandising. A Yoda-centered film would be a merchandising bonanza.
It’s probably a good bet that these stand-alone Star Wars films will largely focus on fringe characters. Think of the possibilities! Fans might finally get the Boba Fett action movie they’ve been dreaming of. Or how about a Jabba the Hut movie with a gangster slant? Or a blaxploitation movie about Lando Calrissian’s rise to power in Cloud City (Djlando Unchained)? It will be really interesting to see how far Disney wants to take this.
