The above video offers a surprisingly intimate glimpse into the occasionally sad life of a hardcore sports fan. In this case, it’s a guy who’s range of fandom includes Kentucky basketball, the Detroit Pistons and the player who starred for both teams, small forward Tayshaun Prince.
Prince was traded to the Memphis Grizzlies yesterday, as part of a three-team swap also involving the Toronto Raptors. The Pistons got back point guard Jose Calderon.
The guy in the video is clearly unaware of the trade earlier in the day as he rises to watch the Pistons players enter the court-side area. He just stands there, eagerly anticipating Prince’s arrival (and perhaps the high-five that will accompany it) and then gradually realizing that it’s never going to happen. You can’t really blame him for expecting to see Prince — after all, he never misses games due to injury or any other reason.
The guy then sits down, checks his phone and learns the news: Prince is no longer a Piston. He then does what many fans would do and removes his jersey — it can no longer be worn. Good thing he had the foresight to wear a Kentucky T-shirt underneath.
It’s actually quite a touching moment. Let’s hope, for this guy’s sake, that the break-up is swift and clean and the healing begins soon.
