Star Wars fans are nothing if not voracious consumers of all things related to the fictional universe they love so much. So it should come as no surprise that it took less than a day for fans to identify possible plot details about Star Wars Episode 7, the first Disney-led Star Wars film, buried deep inside a relatively mundane Reuters article about how George Lucas shot sequences set on the planet Yavin 4 in a Guatemalan rainforest.
The alleged plot details appear near the end of the article and, if true, would represent a pretty major spoiler. This is your last warning, should you prefer to keep your Episode 7 experience unspoiled.
Yavin 4 and the rebel base return to the Star Wars plot in the forthcoming Episode VII, announced in October by the Walt Disney Co, in which Skywalker comes back to the planet to build a Jedi Knight academy. However, fans said that Disney will likely film those scenes in a studio rather than return to Tikal.
Wait… what? Luke is going to be in Episode 7? And he’s running a Jedi academy (or Jedi Praxeum, more accurately)? That’s a pretty big bombshell to drop in an article like this one.
At this time, we have no way to know whether the plot details are accurate. Reuters doesn’t cite a source and it seems exceptionally unlikely that Disney would allow such information to leak out at this stage — and especially not in this fashion.
It’s possible that Disney, wanting to accelerate production of Episode 7, has already notified property owners in Guatemala of their intention to return to the location to shoot new sequences — and that these Guatamalans didn’t realize passing this information on to a Reuters reporter would be such a big deal.
Then again, The Guardian notes that the whole thing might just be a misunderstanding and that Yavin 4 and the idea of a Jedi Academy run by Luke are merely plot elements from the expanded Star Wars universe, which emerged in the form of novels following the release of Episode 4 — and not, in fact, something that we’ll see on the big screen.
Expect a denial from Disney either way.
