Jay-Z is one of the most powerful men in America, but he’s still a pretty normal, grounded dude. At least, that’s what he wants the world to think.
Back in September, when he was in the middle of eight straight concerts at the Barclay’s Center in Brooklyn, Hova decided to do what any other normal, grounded New Yorker would do: he hopped on the subway. With a bodyguard and a documentary crew.
On the subway, Jay encountered an older woman. The brief chat between the two is actually really compelling (and kind of adorable). She asks his name, he meekly admits he’s a musician. At the end, she realizes she has heard of him, after all.
Take a look:
The scene is part of the documentary Where I’m From, which documents the Barclay’s concert series from start to finish. You can watch the whole thing on YouTube.
Interestingly, it appears the older woman in the video, Ellen, is actually a bit of a celebrity herself. Eagle-eyed commenters have noted she looks an awful lot like Ellen Grossman, a NYC-based artist who’s won quite a few awards in her time.
