R&B producer / singer-songwriter Ryan Leslie is probably a millionaire. He’s written and produced some hit songs and even been nominated for a Grammy. Still, it’s probably safe to say that he doesn’t have a million bucks just lying around, collecting dust. He’s not that big of a star.
He’s that big of an idiot, though.
When Leslie lost a laptop earlier this year while touring Europe — a laptop that contained unfinished tracks he was working on for Kanye West and Jay-Z — he offered a $20,000 reward for anyone who found and returned the device. When that didn’t work, he upped the ante — considerably. Like, 50 times as much money considerably.
In this video, Leslie proclaimed that he would pay out a reward of $1 million for the laptop:
Soon after, someone actually found the laptop. It was a German man named Armin Augstein and he returned it to police who returned it to Leslie. And, gasp, he asked for the $1 million that was promised.
Leslie refused to pay up, though, and the case went to court.
Last week, an American court ruled in favor of Augstein. They decided that Leslie’s reward offer was legally binding.
Leslie now seems resigned to his fate. He posted the following message and photo on his Twitter and Instagram feeds after the verdict:
“Ain’t no way to get around ups & downs.” Jury of my peers rules for the plaintiff. instagr.am/p/Sl3lrvhWqF/
