Pee on stick. Wait. Fret. Check result. Either squeal with delight and begin envisioning nursery wallpaper, or shriek with terror and break the news to the man you blame for this tragedy.
These are the predictable rituals that accompany a home pregnancy test.
Less predictable: the positive result for a dude who peed on his female friend’s home pregnancy test for a laugh.
It turned out to be no laughing matter, though, since the result indicated a case of undiagnosed testicular cancer.
Such was the experience of an unnamed man whose peculiar phantom “pregnancy” was conveyed through a “rage comic” on Reddit.
Although the comic was intended to provide a quick chuckle, loads of Redditors commented that the man depicted in the comic should get himself to a doctor for a testicular cancer check-up, stat.
Home pregnancy tests, it turns out, detect beta human chorionic gonadotropin (hCG), a hormone involved in the development of placenta — and linked to testicular tumors.
“There are very few things in the body that produce beta hCG, and testicular cancer is one of them,” Dr. Mark Pomerantz, a Boston oncologist, told ABC News.
Thanks to the flood of concerned comments on Reddit, the man depicted in the comic (apparently a friend of the Redditor who posted it) sought medical attention and was diagnosed with a testicular tumor.
An update posted on Reddit — again in rage comic format, of course — said the tumor was detected early enough for treatment.
The bad news: the guy may have to lose a testicle. The much better news: due to the early detection, a testicle is likely the only thing he’ll lose.
Oh, and he’s totally not pregnant.
