The Denver Nuggets’ rainbow uniforms (pictured at right), worn by the team between 1983 and 1994, are some of the most beloved uniforms in NBA history–which is weird, because a lot of people hated them and mocked them at the time.
Though the Nuggets abandoned them in the early ’90s, the rainbow jerseys grew on people over time, much the same way that some bad movies become cult classics over the years. They might not have ever looked intimidating, or even visually pleasing in any way, but there’s something about them that people grew to love. They became a sought-after item in the world of hip hop fashion. Kanye West even shouted out the rainbow jerseys in an interview about fresh looks that he’s excited about.
Today, the Nuggets unveiled new alternate uniforms for the 2012 NBA season and, to the delight of many fans, the new duds are clearly influenced by the fan-favorite rainbow uniforms. They aren’t exact recreations–some of the colors of the rainbow, like red and green, are missing–but they are as close as we’re likely to ever see again.
