Since he can no longer be charged with perjury for making statements that contradict those he made during the infamous OJ Simpson murder trial of 1995, Kato Kaelin is now speaking freely about what he believes really happened. Specifically, he’s saying that he thinks Simpson is a killer.
Kaelin is the only person who was around Simpson at the time that Nicole Brown Simpson and Ronald Goldman were killed on June 12, 1994. He went to eat at a nearby McDonald’s with OJ and then came back to stay in his guest house that night.
While on the stand as a witness, Kaelin mostly played dumb. He said that he heard some thumps outside the guest house–presumably made by Simpson, while he was trying to hide evidence–but he didn’t venture out far enough to discover what made the sounds.
In an article posted yesterday, the New York Post quotes Kaelin as saying, “The statute of limitations has now passed . . . so I can now say . . . yes, he did it.”
However, Kaelin is now changing his tune. He told TMZ that he was shocked to read the above quote in the Post. He said that he has maintained for years that he thinks Simpson is the killer, but still claims that he has “no first-hand knowledge.”
Ultimately, it doesn’t really matter what Kaelin thinks. Maybe he was playing dumb during the trial or maybe he is actually just pretty dumb. Police never bothered looking for the real killer after Simpson was acquitted because everyone except Simpson himself now seems to accept that he’s guilty.
