The people running the Facebook page for Dr. Pepper posted this seemingly innocent picture this afternoon, with the caption “now that’s progress”:
It’s a fun marketing illustration that’s sure to get a few “likes” on Facebook and generally improve the way people think of the Dr. Pepper brand, right?
Within minutes of this image being posted, negative comments started flooding in from fundamentalist Christians who claimed to be offended by the picutre. Because, of course, the image above acknowledges the fact that evolution is a real thing.
There were the usual stupid (and empty) threats. People saying that they would be forced to unlike the Dr. Pepper Facebook page and stop buying the beverage because of this image. The word “travesty” was tossed around. Some people cited this photo as evidence that America is going to hell. It got pretty ridiculous.
Geez… It’s a good thing Dr. Pepper didn’t post a photo of Muhammad enjoying a cool drink!
Within an hour or two of the creationist firestorm, the atheists over at Reddit (a group just as narrow-minded as the fundie Christians who started this thing) got wind of what was happening and showed up in the comments to post some genuinely funny stuff, but also to generally be jerks.
The comment battle is still raging. Head over to the Dr. Pepper Facebook page and chime in, if you care to.
